The 2008 Destination Survey for new graduates of the College of Nursing at Michigan State University has revealed the dedication and motivation that these alumni possess. Careers and continued education are among the main goals of the graduates and they are determined to make a difference throughout their nursing careers.
The college graduated 167 students at spring commencement in May. Of those 167, 118 received their bachelor's degree and the remaining 49 received their master's degree and post-master's degree. Of the 105 completed surveys over 60 percent of the graduates will be practicing right here in Michigan.
Starting or continuing a nursing career at Michigan State University has revealed a multitude of opportunities for this year's graduates. The top three areas of interest for recent graduates are cardiology, oncology and pediatrics. Of the 105 graduates who completed this year's survey, 92% have secured positions directly related to the nursing field. Ten percent of graduates are exploring advanced degree options. Over 82% of graduates have plans for work that is directly related to their personal career plans and interests.
Though many graduates are jumping into work, others plan to continue their education. Of those completing their master's degree, 40% plan to concentrate on nursing education. Nearly half of the graduates have some plans to continue education in the future, and 10% of the bachelor's graduates have either been accepted or are considering applying. Another 14% of those who have already graduated with a master's are considering advancing their degree even further. An estimated 80% of the master's and post-master's degree graduates are already working as family nurse practitioners.
Many graduates plan to be involved with Michigan State University for years to come. The survey asked graduates how they would like to stay involved with Michigan State and the College of Nursing. Here are the top three responses:
- Mentoring nursing students
- Attending alumni activities such as homecoming tailgates and MSU athletic events
- Pursuing professional educational opportunities.
Despite moving on, College of Nursing alumni continue to show their dedication and pride, and this class of graduates will make a difference in the nursing community.
